Job Title: Contract Research Officer –Forest / Plant Pathologist
Location: Teagasc (Horticulture), Food Research Centre, Ashtown, Dublin
Title of project: Detection, Epidemiology and Control of P. ramorum and P. kernoviae in Irish Forests (RMIS 6271).

Reporting to Head of Department and/or other nominated manager.

Basic function: Research Scientist in applied forest/plant pathology.

Phytophthora ramorum and P. kernoviae are both recently discovered pathogens that pose a significant threat to forests in Ireland. Of most concern is the recent host range expansion from low value rhododendron to commercial forest plantations. The successful candidate will join a small team of scientists as part of a three-year COFORD-funded project working on the Detection, Epidemiology and Control of P. ramorum and P. kernoviae in Irish Forests.

Project tasks of particular relevance to the successful candidate include:
  1. characterisation of the Irish population of P. ramorum and P. kernoviae;
  2. optimisation of detection and sampling methods;
  3. screening hosts and potential hosts for their susceptibility to Irish isolates and
  4. identifying mechanisms of infection and spread through controlled inoculation experiments and investigations at existing infection sites.
Ultimately the results will lead to improved management and control measures for the forestry sector. The project will focus on an all island approach to disease control and will equip forest managers with the tools they need to effectively manage forests where these pathogens are detected.

The successful candidate will spend a significant amount of time working at the Plant Health Laboratory, Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), Backweston, Celbridge, Co. Kildare and on field work at various locations in Ireland. The research is being done in collaboration with other partners at UCD, Dublin, AFBI, Northern Ireland, and Coillte.
