Sutro Biopharma, located in South San Francisco, is revolutionizing biologics research and development using biochemical protein synthesis to design proteins that have been inaccessible, and even unimaginable, until now. Sutro's synthesis technology opens up opportunities to create protein therapeutics that cannot be produced using conventional methods.

The company is using this technology to introduce novel chemical modifications, including non-natural amino acids, into proteins to make "biobetters" with improved pharmaceutical properties, as well as novel therapeutics. Sutro Biopharma's technology enables the rapid and systematic exploration of many protein drug variants to identify drug candidates.

Once identified, production of these protein drug candidates can be scaled up to commercial levels. In addition to developing its own drug pipeline, Sutro Biopharma is collaborating with select pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the development of novel protein therapeutics that cannot be designed, produced or studied with current technologies.

Responsibilities:

Sutro Biopharma, Inc. is expanding and is looking for energetic and talented individuals to join our multidisciplinary research and development team. You will join our new cell biology/preclinical group and interface with Sutroâ's protein engineering, assay development, high throughput screening, chemistry, and purification groups and will be responsible for the in vitro and in vivo functional analysis of protein therapeutic candidates for multiple projects and programs with a diverse set of biological targets and therapeutic molecules.

This position requires a well rounded PhD Scientist with a solid understanding of both the principles of cell biology/immunology and in vivo biology as well as drug discovery/preclinical development. The ideal candidate will be a creative, flexible thinker with broad interest and expertise in multiple therapeutic areas.

Serve as a team member on multiple project teams providing state-of-the-art scientific knowledge; exert influence on experimental approaches
Use cutting edge approaches to design and execute experiments to support the screening, characterization, selection and early development of biotherapeutic candidates
Analyze and communicate scientific data to team and supervisor with clear interpretation of results and proposed next steps
Initiate and manage outsourced studies to support team and company objectives.

Qualifications:

PhD or MD, PhD in Cell Biology, Immunology or related biological science with 3+ years of experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology organizations
Solid understanding of the principles of drug discovery and development
Outstanding interpersonal skills to coordinate a multidisciplinary team and/or a small team of scientists
Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate and interpret data and generate and present sound proposals and recommendations
Ability to contribute to project teams, clearly define critical paths, milestones and timelines
Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to present scientific and strategic summaries to working groups
Ability to utilize cutting edge scientific knowledge and assays to design and execute experiments that support the needs of multiple projects and programs
Expertise in in vitro and ex vivo assays including characterization of human cells, including immune cells, FACS-based analysis and other approaches to characterize drug candidates.
Expertise in in vivo models of disease
